Recorded at the famous Hansa Studios in Berlin, this album shows Tangerine Dream's further evolution to a more melodic sound, with electric guitars, drums in the tradition of progressive rock, rather than the band's 1970s Berlin School sound.
The drums were played by Klaus Krüger who left the band after the recording sessions to join Iggy Pop on his US Tour.
The track Through metamorphic rocks found its roots in the sudden malfunction of an out board piece of equipment. This happened during the final mix and accidently became part of the song’s basic structure. Albeit it’s critical reception, the album went Top 30 in the UK and is one of the most famous records among Tangerine Dream fans.
“Cloudburst Flight shows off the talents of Edgar Froese as a guitarist. The intensity of his solo is relentless and 'Thru Metamorphic Rocks' is a hypnotic epic, full of swirling pulsing sequencers and drum machines.”
– The Vinyl Review
“An absolute necessity to those who might be at all curious about the band, or even successful experiments within the rock genre.”
- AllMusic
